Obituary for Lachhman Singh

Lachhman Singh, 92, of Yuba City, passed away peacefully at the Rideout Memorial Hospital on Saturday, July 27, 2018, while surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on January 6, 1926, to Arjan Singh and Puran Kaur in Chak 111/12, Montgomery (Sahiwal), Punjab, Pakistan. ~From Chak 111/12, he rode a horse to a school in Chichawatni for his primary education. Being able to ride a horse at an early age was a memory he cherished throughout his whole life; it became a story that was told by him numerous times.

At the age of eleven, he came back to his ancestral village, Shankar, Jalandhar, Punjab, India to attend middle school. In 1942, he passed his matriculation from D.B. High School, Nakodar. D.A.V College Jalandhar became his choice for higher education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in English in 1945. His formal education gave him fluency in Punjabi, English and Urdu.

Another big event of his life in 1945 was his marriage to Nasib Kaur. Being a contractor enabled him to live and travel different parts of India: Dibrugarh and Guwahati in Assam, Bettiah in Bihar, Lucknow, Patna, and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Siliguri in West Bengal, and Bombay in Maharashtra. Also, his work gave him opportunities to live and explore many parts of Nepal.

A big turning point in his life was immigrating to the United States of America in 1984. He started his new life in Yuba City as a farm worker. After a few years, he became a preschool teacher. In 1987, he became a farm labor contractor. This business venture grew over the years with his hard work and dedication.

He was a loving, helpful, hardworking and progressive person. He tried to teach and pass on what he has learned throughout his life to his kids, grand kids and others. He was an inspiration and a role model for many. His presence and charm brought smiles and joy. Having immense curiosity and enthusiasm for new things enabled him to do many things that many would not dare. His passion to read made him an avid reader and a history buff. He was known for his historical knowledge. His dramatic way of story telling was a delight. He was passionate for food, especially home-cooked meals.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Puran Kaur and Arjan Singh; brother, Chain Singh Virdee; and sister, Surinder Kaur. He is survived by his wife, Nasib Kaur; sons, Tarlochan Singh (Sukhwinder) and Amritpal Singh (Paramjeet); six grand kids; six great-grand kids; sisters, Tripat Kaur Pancar, Mohinder Kaur Reehal and Narinder Kaur; brother, Surinder Singh Virdee.
